Editor’s note: Every year Ed Northen, former California firefighter-turned Nordic patroller, fly fisherman and resident poet, gifts Eye on Sun Valley with a Christmas poem. Enjoy.

Advent Language

BY ED NORTHEN

Wrestling
With words
Metaphors

Which define
Light
Love

Even if I arrive
At a definition
A definition is nothing

Unless it takes
Some form
In this present world

Love is not achieved
Unless it becomes a verb
Describing light
Does not help my comprehension

If all I know is darkness
I have no reference
For light or love

Which is why
“The word became flesh
And dwelt among us”

“The true light
That gives light
To the world”
Was given.
