The Sawtooth Avalanche Center will hold its popular Introduction to Avalanches course tonight—Thursday, Jan. 10.

The presentation will take place at 6 p.m. at the Wood River High School Performing Arts Theater at Hailey’s Community Campus.

Tonight’s two-hour presentation describes what you need to know before you go. It will introduce basic concepts about snow, avalanches and how to travel safely in and near avalanche terrain.

Not a bad thing to know considering the avalanches that have slid along Highway 75 north and south of Ketchum and the avalanches the Sun Valley Ski Patrol triggered on Baldy following Monday’s snow.

There is a suggested $10 donation to the Friends of the Sawtooth Avalanche Center, which provides part of the funding for avalanche forecasters.

An optional field session will be held Saturday, Jan. 12, near Galena Summit. There is a suggested donation of $40 for the hands-on field course.

Meanwhile, lead forecaster Ethan Davis will discuss “Forecasting Weather for your Tour” during a  “Digging Deeper” event on Wednesday Jan. 16, at 6:30 p.m. at Sturtevants.

Davis will discuss how you can go beyond looking at sun and snow icons on your phone to up your morning weather forecasting game when you head out the door. He will present the low down on tricks, tips, websites and tools useful for predicting the weather.
