Learn How to Give Crime Victims a Stronger Voice
Saturday, January 19, 2019

A national expert on relationship violence will describe how Idahoans can provide crime victims with more protections and a stronger voice in the criminal justice system on Wednesday, Jan. 23.

Pamela Lasseter Cathey, founder and president for the Institute for the Prevention of Relationship Violence, will speak at noon Wednesday, Jan. 23, at the Hailey Public Library. The event is free and open to the public.

Cathay is author of two books on relationship violence and an expert on the healing process for victims. She also is the director of advocacy and research for Marsy’s Law for Idaho, which she will address on Wednesday.

Marsy’s Law for Idaho is a proposed constitutional amendment that would require victim notification when an offender escapes or absconds from probation and parole. It would also give victims the right to confer with prosecutors and put victims’ rights on equal standing with those accused or convicted of offenses.

Last year the amendment fell five votes short of the two-thirds majority needed in the House to advance through the Legislature. The measure will likely be re-introduced in the coming weeks.

“There is a real need to take victims’ right in Idaho to the next level and Pamela Cathey understands the benefits of giving victims a better sense of safety and involvement in our legal system,” said Sara Westbrook, state director for Marsy’s Law for Idaho. “This event will provide valuable information and tools to victims of crime, those who advocate for victims and anyone interested in supporting stronger victims’ rights in our state.”

Nationwide, ten states have approved Marsy’s Law. Voters in six states approved constitutional amendments advancing victims’ rights last November.
