Little City of the Rocks Trip Kicks Off Wildflower Season
Friday, April 26, 2019

Tiptoe through the hoodoos and breathe in the first vestiges of spring.

The Wood River Chapter of the Idaho Native Plant Society is sponsoring a field trip to Little City of the Rocks between Gooding and Fairfield on Saturday, April 27.

The area—a mini version of City of the Rocks south of Oakley--boasts hoodoos and rock formations that are both beautiful and eerie at the same time.

And you can bet your arrowleaf balsamroot and other spring wildflowers will have sprung.

Retired Forest Service rangeland specialist John Shelley is leading the field trip, along with Botanist Cynthia Langlois and Field Trip Captain Gretchen Basen.

The group will meet up at the Timmerman Hill Rest Stop just before 9 a.m. Saturday so car pools can leave the rest stop at 9 a.m.

Participants should wear long pants and sturdy shoes and bring insect repellent in case of ticks. Bring also water, lunch sunscreen and hiking poles.

The hike is rated moderate for uneven terrain and cross-country walking. Car pools should return to the rest stop by 3 p.m.

There is no charge although memberships in the local chapter are encouraged. Questions? Call Kristin Fletcher at 208-721-2583.
