Imagine skateboarding on a layer of candy corn!

It’s a definite possibility for the person who purchased Mary Jones’ “Cowabunga” skateboard covered with candy corn and gumballs at the Board Bin’s fourth annual Street Party & Creating for Skating Party on Saturday.

The auction of skateboards decorated by local youth and adults raised about $5,000 for the upkeep of Guy Coles Skateboard Park. The take was half of last year’s $10,000, in part because the event had been postponed due to inclement weather.

Kirsten Phillips shows off her Ibis board.

“But people stepped up,” said Board Bin employee Kirsten Phillips. “Some people decorate their rooms with the skateboards. Others actually use them as skateboards.”

The art this year ranged from Julie Seyferth’s beautiful depiction of a parrot titled “It’s a Jungle Out There” to artist Brent Rasmussen’s signature style resembling stained glass. C. Gordon Knight injected a little social commentary with his board titled “eat the rich.” And Chandra Barney painted a haunting face of a woman titled “In the Cosmos.”

“It’s fun painting on skateboards as canvas,” said Phillips, who created an ibis with a cutout, stencils and spray paint.

“I love it!” said Diane Goodwin as she held up a board featuring Sun Valley Olympic Gold Medalist Gretchen Fraser. “I just wish I had painted one. I forgot all about it.”

Matt Crow decorated “Dragon Ruca” and “The Saga.”
Julia Seyferth of the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation donated this beautiful board.

Lily Richardson appealed to fly-fishermen with her “Hooked on Idaho.”
