The Sawtooth Avalanche Center has kicked off its 2019-20 reporting season with a new forecast template, and expanded forecast area and website improvements.

  • The U.S. Forest Service National Avalanche Center and several major U.S. Forest Service avalanche centers across the western United States have pooled resources to develop a common avalanche forecast template to insert a forecast into any avalanche center website.

The collaborative effort will maximize avalanche centers’ financial resources while improving consistency.

  • The center has added staffing, with the help of an Off Road Motor Vehicle grant from the Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation. The center will now have four forecasters plus one intern.

That will double the area covered by avalanche forecasts.

The ability to survey additional terrain on Sawtooth, Boise and Salmon-Challis National Forests near Banner Summit and Stanley, Smiley Creek, Atlanta and Carey will increase coverage area from 1.15 million acres to more than 2 million acres.

  • The Friends of the Sawtooth Avalanche Center received a grant from the Ferris and Minor families, as well as the Nicholas Martin Jr. Family Foundation to build a new website platform. Users will see a clean modern look, better viewing on mobile devices, improved media function and search features. A second phase of upgrades will be done next summer.

Before this latest snow pack, the south-central Idaho snowpack was between 50 percent and 70 percent of average. To keep up on the latest, visit www.sawtoothgavalanche.com.
